Grammar in Context
I. Study the following sentences containing double negation.
1. It is not uncommon to get into a mode where you think, “If only I had object X, my life would be perfect and I would behappy.” (Para. 2, Text B, Unit 6)
2. But this you cannot do with any success without knowing the language, for language is the principal symbol system of communication. (Para.7, Text A, Unit 8)
e.g. 1. There was no one who did not feel sympathy for the victims of the accident.
(Everyone felt sympathy for the victims of theaccident.)
2. It is not unusual for a family to have more than one car to use in daily life.
(It is usual for a family to have more than one car to use in daily life.)
二、never...without...
e.g. The dog never crosses a street without stopping at the curb.
e.g. No Japanese breakfast is complete without miso soup, is it?
