W:  Hello. How can I help you, sir?

M:  Where do you suggest I go?

W:  What do you like?

M:  I really like contemporary art.  

W:  Try the National Art Gallery.

M:  Where is it?   

W:  Go down this road. Then turn left. It’s on the right side of the street.

M:  Where do I turn left?

W:  At Los Alamos BLVD.

M:  Is it open every day?

W:  It is open every day, except on Mondays. It closes at 6 p.m.

M:  Is the admission free?  

W:  It costs 4 dollars to get in.

M:  Thanks.

B.  Watch the Video Asking for and Giving Directions (2) and answer the following questions.

M:  Where’s the good place to take my kids?

W:  I would suggest the Science Museum.

M:  That sounds good! How do I get to the Science Museum?

W:  Take the underground to West End Station. Then go right on Boulton Road and turn left. You can’t miss it.   

M:  When do I turn left?

W:  Turn left at the intersection with the National Savings Bank at the corner.

M:  Is it free?  

W:  Children under 12 are free, but it is 3.90 for adults. There is a good dinosaur collection on exhibit now.

M:  Mmm… I’m sure my children will love it! Thanks for your help.

The Lion King

(Simba starts to wake Mufasa.)

Simba: (Running into cave) Dad! Dad! Come on Dad, we gotta go. Wake up! (Jumps over some lionesses) Oops! Sorry. (Jumps up next to Mufasa) Dad? Dad. Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad…

Sarabi:  (Over Simba’s endless noise of “Dad’s”, sleepily) Your son… is awake…

Mufasa:  (Also sleepily) Before sunrise, he’s your son.

Simba:  Dad. Come on, Dad. Rrrr…

Simba:  You promised!

Mufasa:  (Seeing his son’s impatience) Okay, okay. I’m up. I’m up.

Simba:  Yeah!

[Mufasa yawns (打哈欠)  a well-recorded lion yawn. Mufasa and Sarabi follow Simba up to the top of Pride Rock. Simba rubs up against Sarabi, she nudges (轻推) him ahead and stays behind. The sunrise illuminates (照亮)  the top of Pride Rock impressively. Both Simba and Mufasa are on the point.]

Mufasa: Look, Simba. Everything the light touches is our kingdom.

Simba:  Wow.

Mufasa: A king’s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king.

Simba:  And this will all be mine?

Mufasa:  Everything. 

Simba:  Everything the light touches. (Simba looks all around.) What about that shadowy (有阴影的)  place?

Mufasa: That’s beyond our borders. You must never go there, Simba.

Simba:  But I thought a king could do whatever he wants.

Mufasa: Oh, there’s more to being king than getting your way all the time.

(Mufasa starts back down the rock.)

Simba:  [Awed (充满敬畏地) ] There’s more?

Mufasa: Haha, Simba.

Mufasa: Everything you see, exists together, in a delicate balance (微妙的平衡) . As king, you need to understand that balance, and respect all the creatures, from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope (羚羊) .

Simba:   But Dad, don’t we eat the antelope?

Mufasa: Yes, Simba, but let me explain. When we die, our bodies become the grass. And the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great circle of life.

I Need Directions

      A man who hated his wife’s cat decided to get rid of the cat by driving it 20 blocks from his home and leaving it at the park. As he was driving back into his driveway, there was the cat! He kept taking the cat farther and farther away, but the cat would always get home. At last, he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right and so on until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and he left the cat there. Hours later, the man called home to his wife, “Jennie, is the cat there?” “Yes,” the wife answered. “Why do you ask?” Frustrated, the man answered, “Put that damn cat on the phone. I’m lost and I need directions!”
