After studying this unit, students are expected to
1. express themselves appropriately when parting;
2. be able to distinguish between formal and informal expressions for saying goodbye;
3. know how words and sentences are stressed and be able to emphasize these stresses;
4. listen for specific information.

In most cases, parting means more than simply saying “Goodbye.” People often use the occasion as an opportunity to imply a future meeting, extend an invitation, express good wishes and/or show gratitude and/or concern. People choose different expressions of farewell according to the particular time, place and the relationship between those partings.
● Work with your partner, discussing the following questions, and then share your answers with the rest of the class.
1. “All of us will experience sorrows and happiness, reunions and partings, just as the moon will not always be full.” Do you know the meaning of the sentence? Try to translate it into Chinese.
2. How do people usually express themselves when they part from someone? What body language do they sometimes use besides saying some parting words?
