Pre-reading activities

Lead-in

Watch the video and answer the following questions.

Q: 1) How did Audrey Hepburn describe her trip to Ethiopia?

It was an extraordinary trip filled with mixed emotions. She was heart-breaking but also very encouraged and optimistic.

 2) What did Audrey Hepburn hope the public would do?

She hoped people would understand that once again there was a drought in Africa, and in Ethiopia in particular. That was potentially much worse than the last time. It was awfully hard to ask people to prevent a disaster rather than help once it had happened like the last time. UNICEF was everywhere helping the children, and specially helping them to help themselves. She might really give UNICEF a shout what UNICEF wanted to do was to give them a spade to dig their water wells but not to dig the graves for their children.

3) How did Audrey Hepburn influence the world?

She dedicated her life to doing humanitarian work for UNICEF. She drew attention to the issue of the world’s poorest children and awakened the world into action.
