1.5 IELTSreading strategies P1-6

P1 Nowlet’s look at Section 1.5 IELTS Reading Strategies. IELTS reading incorporatesthree passages (roughly 1000-1400 words per passage excerpted from well-knownscientific journals ) and 40 questions in total, which is highly challenging tomost Chinese readers pertaining to the pressure of reading speed and accuracy.In the part of language acquisition, we have acquired insights to identify thetrunk in a long sentence and techniques to apply linearity in translating along sentence into Chinese in order to improve reading efficiency. Based onwhich, we are going to explore a three-step fast reading strategy in thissection. This fast reading strategy is question-driven& synonym-driven:

Step 1. Identifythe sentence trunk(SVO主谓宾/SVP主系表) and key words in the questions.

Step 2. Locate inthe original text based on the key words identified in the questions.

Step 3. Confirmanswers based on the synonym-driven model.

P2 To be specific,we can adopt skimming to get the general idea by reading theopening & concluding paragraphs, or the topic sentence (e.g. the 1st,the 2nd ,the last, or the 1st+the last sentence of each paragraph,etc.).

We can also use scanning to acquire specific information. While scanning,we shall pay close attention to such locating words as figures, capitalized,italic and bold letters, proper nouns including names of people, place,country, company, organization, etc.

P3 Also, we shall stay calm andmake full use of both skimming and scanning when necessary, we shall also makeadjustments of reading strategy & speed according to different types ofquestions. Above all, we shall pay special attention to such signposts asmarker words, connectors, linking words and transitional words.

P4 Let me summarize what we havelearned in Part 2 in order to read faster:

1.   four types of questions in IELTS reading

-matching &LH

-filling in theblanks

-multiple choice

-True, False orNot Given,/Yes, No or Not Given

2.   a 3-step general reading strategy

step 1:Identifying sentence trunk and the key words in the questions;

step 2: Locatingin the original text based on the key words;

step 3:Confirming answers based on synonyms.

3.  fast reading training

-skimming 略读

-scanning 寻读

P5 Last but not least, I would sum up the important pointsin Module 1: this course is intended to realize the objective of knowledge,ability and quality from such three areas:

1.     Language acquisition: identify the trunk and modifiers ofa long sentence, and subsequently translate them into Chinese via linearity;

2.     Reading strategies: summarize various IELTS readingquestions into four types, and follow a three-step general reading strategy toread faster along with skimming and scanning; build up students ‘criticalthinking, team-work spirit and patriotism outlook, etc.

P6 Now, you have finished the task of Module 1.Congratulations! Bye bye!
