4.2 Writing effective sentences
According to Illustrated Oxford Dictionary, a sentence is a set of words which complete in itself as the expression of a thought, containing or implying a subject and predicate, and conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command.
In other words, a sentence is a complete thought that is expressed by a subject and a predicate, and that makes senseand can stand alone. Here we can see the following two features of a sentence:
l Each sentence expresses a complete thought and makes sense on its own.
l Each sentence contains a subject and a predicate.
(The subject tells who or what the sentence is about, and the predicate tells what the subject is doing.)
Generally speaking, effective sentences are concise, varied and emphatic.
