4.1 Choosing effective words
According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, a word is a sound or combination of sounds or the written symbols forming a unit of the grammar or vocabulary of a language. Words are the most basic units of writing. They are just like bricks out of which the writer constructs larger structures.
When we write, we should bear in mind the following guidelines about the choice of words to achieve accuracy and appropriateness.
l Use common words for general purposes; use formal or nonstandard words only on special occasions or for special purposes.
l Use specific and concrete words when giving details; use general or abstract words when making summaries.
l Use idiomatic expressions and words in acceptable collocations; avoid combinations that are unidiomatic.
l When there are synonyms, choose the word that expresses the meaning most exactly and that suits the content and style.
l Avoid faulty use of the pronouns.
l Avoid the use of jargon and slang.
