Identifying the rhetorical context
Academic writing, like writing in general, is a matter of thinking on paper. It involves a process, philosophically speaking, from zero to one, and then to many. By zero, we mean that at the beginning stage there is only a mess in the writer’s mind. Through a series of thinking, clarifying and researching activities, the writer gradually gets an idea. This part of the process, which may be called “from zero to one,” is a fundamental step in academic writing. Once the idea is born, the writer may form his or her concepts and develop them by different methods.
