4 Elizabeth meets Mr. Wickham (4-1)

 DAY 11;  Mar. 8

4 Elizabeth meets Mr. Wickham 4-1

1. When later that morning Lydia suggested walking to Meryton to see some of the officersall her sisters except Mary agreed to accompany herEven Mr. Collins went with themencouraged by Mr. Bennetwho was by now most anxious to have some time to himselfDuring their walkthe girls listened politely to Mr. Collins’ self-important speeches but as soon as they entered Merytonthe younger ones no longer even pretended to be interested in his conversationbut looked eagerly around in search of the officers

2. Just then all the young ladies noticed a very gentleman-like young manwhom they had never seen beforewalking down the street with an officer they knewThey were all wondering who the handsome stranger could bewhen the officer came up to them to greet themHe asked permission to introduce his friendwhose name was Mr. Wickhamand who had apparently arrived recently from Londonto become an officer in the regiment(兵团)This was exactly as it should bebecause the young man only needed an officer's uniform to become completely charmingHe was very good-lookingwith a very pleasantsociable mannerand after the introductionsconversation flowed most enjoyably in the little groupThey were still standing and talking happily togetherwhen they heard the sound of horsesand saw Darcy and Bingley riding down the streetThe two gentlemen came straight towards the ladies to greet themBingley was clearly most interested in Jane Bennetand started talking particularly to herDarcyhoweverwas just determining not to look at Elizabethwhen he suddenly noticed the strangerBy chance Elizabeth saw Darcy's and Wickham's faces at the moment when they caught sight of each otherand she was astonished at the effect of the meetingBoth changed colourone whitethe other redAfter a few moments Mr. Wickham touched his hatand Mr. Darcy nodded very slightly What could this meanIt was impossible to imagineand it was impossible not to wish to know

3. In another moment Mr. Bingleywho did not seem to have noticed what had happenedsaid goodbye and rode away with Mr. DarcyThe two officers accompanied the young ladies to Mrs. Philips’ housebut did not go inin spite of Lydia's repeated invitationsMrs. Philips was always glad to see her niecesand welcomed Mr. Collins most politely when he was introduced to herShe did nothoweverhave any more information for the girls about the agreeable Mr. Wickham

4. ‘But I tell you whatmy dears’she said brightly‘I'm giving a little supper party for some of the officers tomorrow I’ll ask Mr. Philips to visit Mr. Wickham and invite him to come tooWill you all come as well

5. The girls were delighted and agreed at once to this arrangementand the whole group walked back to Longbournhappily discussing the enjoyable evening they were going to haveMr. Collins had been very impressed with Mrs. Philips’ politeness and when they reached Longbournhe complimented Mrs. Bennet on her sister's elegance and charming manners

6. The next evening the carriage took him and his five cousins to Merytonand the girls had the pleasure of hearingas they entered the hallthat Mr. Wickham had accepted their uncle's invitationand was at that moment in the house

7. When Mr. Collins was shown into the sitting-roomand had time to look around and admire ithe said immediately to Mrs. Philips‘MadamI must compliment you on the size and furniture of this room. ReallyI could almost imagine myself in the smaller summer breakfast-room at Rosings

8. This remark did not at first please his hostess very much but when she heard from him what Rosings wasand who its owner wasand how much Lady Latherine's furniture costshe realized what a great compliment it wasDuring the evening Mr. Collins found Mrs. Philips a kind and attentive listener which was fortunateas the Bennet girls could not bring themselves to listen to him any longer

9. All the ladies were impatient to see Mr. Wickhamand when he came into the roomhe appeared far more charming and gentlemanly than any of the officers presentHe was the lucky man towards whom almost every female eye turnedand Elizabeth was the lucky woman beside whom he finally took his seatHis pleasant way of making conversation made her feel that he could talk interestingly about anythingAs he did not play cardswhich some of the party were doinghe stayed talking to Elizabeth for a large part of the eveningShe hoped he would tell her how he knew Mr. Darcybut she dared not mention that gentlemanLuckilyhoweverMr. Wickham himself began to talk about italthough in a rather hesitating manner

Task for Pride and Prejudice 11

NOTES:

1. The next evening the carriage took him and his five cousins to Meryton.

2. By chance Elizabeth saw Darcy's and Wickham's faces at the moment when they caught sight of each otherand she was astonished at the effect of the meetingBoth changed colourone whitethe other redAfter a few moments Mr. Wickham touched his hatand Mr. Darcy nodded very slightly

3. ‘Madam,I must compliment you on the size and furniture of this room. ReallyI could almost imagine myself in the smaller summer breakfast-room at Rosings’  para. 7)

“夫人,您的房间如此宽敞,家具如此精美,我必须向您表示祝贺。实际上我几乎可以想象出我正身处罗新斯小型的夏日早餐厅!”

4. This remark did not at first please his hostess very much, but when she heard from him what Rosings was,and who its owner was,and how much Lady Latherine's furniture cost, she realized what a great compliment it was.

这句话起初并没有使女主人感到十分高兴,可是,当她得知罗新斯是什么、它的主人是谁、凯瑟琳夫人的家具多么昂贵时,她才认识到刚才的话是何等的恭维。
