Chapter 7  Cultural Patterns

Chapter Lead-in:

    文化是一个宏观的整体,但学习文化的过程往往要求人们将文化分成不同的部分,在这一过程中,人们必须意识到“文化模式”的存在。“文化模式”是指生活在一定的民族和社会中的人们长期适应、共同遵守一种独特的文化规则,从而所表现出来的价值取向、行为模式、心理趋向等一整套文化系统。西方的学者通过研究和实证从不同角度概括了文化模式的内容,这其中就包括霍尔的高语境-低语境文化模式区分,克拉克洪的五个价值取向理论以及霍夫斯代德的四对文化维度分析。本章将通过阐述这三种文化模式的内容和意义来对不同文化的信仰、价值观、规则和行为模式进行具体的描述。

After reading and watching the case, finish the following tasks with your group members.

1. Discuss the following questions with your group members, and get ready to report your findings to the class. 

   1) What does it mean by "to act appropriately" here? 

   2) What do you think is the commonly held value about marriage in Indonesia?

   3) Can you get the hinted meaning of this behavior?

   4) Why did Shaheed quit the idea of marrying the Indonesian young lady, even though they loved each other very much?

   5) In what way did the Indonesian young lady's mother refuse Shaheed's mother's marriage proposal? And what did she mean by serving bananas with the tea?

   6) How does this case reflect the ways of Indonesian communication?
