Chapter 8    Cultural Influences on Contexts

 

Chapter Lead-in:

    语境这一概念在跨文化交际学科中具有非常重要的意义。脱离了对不同文化中语境差异的辨析和研究,跨文化交际的理论和实践研究都将是无源之水,不能行之长久。本章将对语境与文化的关系、语境与交际的关系进行深入探讨,以求揭示语境的内涵,并使学习者意识到语境分析之于跨文化交际能力提高的重要意义。此外,本章将就与人们日常生活紧密相关的三个语境:商务语境、教育语境和医疗语境展开论述,对不同文化中这三种语境下的行为模式、观念态度的异同进行阐述分析,使学习者能够行之有效地应对跨文化交际过程中各种语境下的具体问题。

Learning Objectives:

In this chapter, students will learn how to:

  • perceive the relationship between context and communication

  • describe different views towards various contexts in different cultures.

  • understand the management concept and behavioral modes of business context.

After reading and watching the case, finish the following tasks with your group members.

1. Discuss the following questions with your group members, and get ready to report your findings to the class. 

   1) Why do you think the students keep silent?

   2) What might you do if you are required to edit your classmates' essays?

   3) Do you often behave the same way in class as the students in the case? Why?

   4) What suggestions can you give to Karen about how to teach Chinese students well?

   5) What kind of cultural phenomenon can be reflected in the case above?
