Pre-reading Activity

Form groups of 4 or 5 and discuss whether you have come across any discriminating descriptions of people owing to their different national, ethnic or regional origins?

Text B Study

Read Text B through Page 113 to Page 118 to get the key points of the text. Below is the text audio for you to follow. 


After reading the text, try to find out the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the title of Text B? How do you understand it?

2. Please write down the subtitles of Text B and make clear the structure in the text.

3. Read Text B, and underline the content that you think are important.

4. Find out the definitions of ethnocentrismstereotypingprejudice and racism after you figure out their word formation.

5. Find out the possible causes and results of ethnocentrism, stereotyping, prejudice and racism. 

6. Try to give some appropriate examples for each of these attitudinal barriers and get ready to present to the class.
