Read Text C through Page 143 to Page 147 to get the key points of the text. Below is the text audio for you to follow. 


After reading the texts, try to find out the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the title of Text C? How do you understand it?

2. Please write down the subtitles of Text C and make clear the structure in the text.

3. Read Text C, and underline the content that you think are important.

4. Figure out the specific differences between each pair of verbal communication styles mentioned in this text. Then list as many relevant cultures as you can.

5. Compare American culture and Chinese culture and decide which is more typical of each pair of verbal communication styles.


Sometimes called the Emirates or the UAE, the United Arab Emirates is a country situated in the east of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia on the Persian Gulf. About four-fifths of the UAE is desert. The official religion of the country is Islam, and the official language is Arabic. The UAE is a federation consisting of seven emirates. It was formally established on December 2, 1971. Its capital city is Abu Dhabi, which is located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Though small in size, the UAE has become an important player in regional and international affairs. It is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Its oil reserves are ranked among the largest in the world. The country has one of the most developed economies in West Asia. It is also one of the world’s wealthiest nations and fastest-growing tourist destinations.
