Nathaniel Hawthorne: Young Goodman Brown

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusettes in 1804. He was the descentent of John Hathorne, one of the judges in the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. Since an accused witch had cursed him "God will give you  blood to drink", the Hathorne added a "w" to the family name. He wrote down what he read and observed in his notebooks and harvested enough background material for his stories and novels.
