The Return of the Native is one of the four great tragic novels by Hardy. Some critics think that it is Hardy's greatest novel because it shows him at his best. In the description of Egdon Heath, Hardy transforms nature into different entities, with human beings as one of them. The heath is cosmic while human beings are insignificant. The dwarfed stature of human beings is shown in the novel more clearly than in other novels by Hardy.
