Learning objectives for this unit

  1. Getting to know short story as a genre and how to analyze a short story

  2.  Analysizing Everyday Use in-depth (in perspectives of: Historical context, Plot overview, Characterization, Themes and motifs; Symbols, Voice, diction and humor, Irony)

  3. Getting a general understanding of: Alice Walker; Black Power Movement/Civil Rights Movements/Black Awareness; cultural identity; the Civil War

  4. Practicing language skills: Completing the writing, speaking, translating tasks as described in the following.


Tasks for Everyday Use:

Writing tasks:

  1. Write a 800+ word paper on one of the topics given below

    Analysis of the major characters (Mama, Maggie and Dee) of Everyday Use

    Analysis of the theme of Everyday Use

    Symbolism in Everyday Use
