Unit Three
Part I. Listening one: How to manke chewing gum
Intervie Interviewer Today in the studio we have Michael Proctor. Can you explain to our listeners how chewing gum is made?
Michael Yes, of course. We only use the gum from rubber trees, like chicle. We cut a lot of Xs into the tree so that the chicle can run down the tree into a bucket.
Interviewer I see.
Michael Next, the chicle is heated in large pots and sugar and different flavours are added. Large machines then mix the mass until it is properly smooth and rubbery.
Interviewer And then?
Michael Then it is put on a flat bed and rolled again and again until it is the proper thickness.
Interviewer But the chewing gum I buy is always in little pieces!
Michael We are not finished. First the chewing gum gets a covering of sugar. Then it is broken into little sticks. Now we have the chewing gum, as you know it.

Part II. Listening Two: How to change a damaged plug
Cut off the damaged plug. Take off the back of the new plug. Now cut away about 50mm of the insulation around the cable. Now you can see the three wires. Cut off about 15mm of the insulation on each of the brown, green/yellow and blue wires. Take off the cable gripper on the new plug and put in the new cable. Unscrew each of the three screws and put the bare copper wire from each colour into its respective place as follows:
Blue is neutral and goes on the left;
The green / yellow earth wire goes at the top in the middle;
The brown wire is live and goes on the right.
Put the screws on tightly so that the wires cannot come out. Put the cable gripper back to stop the wires from moving. Put the back cover on the plug again. Your plug is ready.
