Part I. Listening one: Mike Canning's Story
Part1
I went straight from school to a job in a small IT firm. My job was to get the post ready for collection and to make sure the printer had enough paper in it. I liked dealing with customers and learning how to advise them. My boss was a good employer and the pay and conditions were very fair. He also sent me to college part-time where I learnt a lot about computers.
Part2
A few months later, a new company opened down the street. They started having special deals that we couldn’t match. After Christmas last year, I was unemployed. I then joined the job centre, and I was out of work for three months.
After writing a lot of letters of application I got this job at a warehouse. But I’m on a temporary contract, so it’s not very secure. And I’m on the night shift, so the hours are hard. And the people I work with aren’t very friendly. The wages aren’t bad, but it’s a really boring, dead-end job. I want to get another job in the computer business.
Part II. Listening Two: Viewing
The Correct Office Etiquette
Stella What do you think of ournew trainee?
Anna Oh, you mean Maggie?
Stella Yes. I’mafraid somebody must talk to her about her clothes.
Anna You’reright. The dress she is wearing today is a bit too short.
Stella Short? My mother would call it a belt. Mr Carson from the finance department couldn’t stop looking ather.
Anna Well, perhaps that is the fashion these days. But not for the office.
Stella And I amgoing to ask her not to chew bubble gum while she is working.
Anna She doesn’t, does she?
Stella I’m afraid she does. Sheeven blows bubbles when she is concentrating on her work.
Anna I wonder if she is thebest person for the job.
Stella Yesterday shespent twenty minutes talking to her boyfriend on the phone. When I asked her tostop, she told her boyfriend in a loud voice that “One of the other secretariessays I can’t make personal calls in office time.”
Anna Well, she can’t. I think we should have a word with the personnel manager.
Stella I feel sorryfor her. She could lose her job if we do. Perhaps one of us should talk to herabout the correct office etiquette.
Anna I think youshould. You are older. She will listen to you. Oh, and when you do, ask her notto bring fish and chips back to the office at lunchtime.
