Having a debate on online dating

Based on the unit theme, you will expected to engage in a debate on online dating based on the following steps.

  1. Read the following statements. Work in pairs and discuss whether each statement is for or against online dating.

    (1) There isi something depressing about it because it increases a person's isolation.

    (2) You order clothing online. Now you order boyfriends or girlfriends online.

    (3) We go to the computer because we kind of feel that we are less than perfect.

    (4) You think you are talking to someone handsome. Then all of a sudden he shows up, and it's like "Oh, my."

    (5) Online dating reduces the anxiety about making a good impression.

    (6) Young women who have gone out with male Net friends found out that they were married.

    (7) The Internet has brought a new dating scence. If you make the most of it, you can find a true match.

    (8) Don't sit in isolation. Get out and get a life. Go to places where you're going to start meeting people.

    (9) You can put the truth out there and then search for someone who is compatible with your idea.

    (10) Most people who are online are looking for true love. With intitial caution and care, it can be found.

  2. Form detabe teams of seven. Each team elects one judge. Group the rest into two that have opposite positions.

  3. Brainstorm several arguments for or against online dating in respective groups. Discuss strategies and possible counter arguments.

  4. Come back to the team and start with the debate. Assign equal length of time for both sides to speak and argue.

  5. Decide which side wins the debate, evaluated by the judge.
