●  1. You are going to listen to an instructor talking about accepting and rejecting advice. Listen carefully and ill in the blanks with the missing words.

In the previous unit we learned how to ask for and give advice. In this unit we are going to learn how to accept and reject advice. As we all know, advice can help us better consider our decision and/or course of conduct. Actually, there are two likely responses to a piece of advice. We either accept it happily or reject it politely. Either way, we are supposed to politely express our gratitude (谢意) . We should bear in mind the likelihood (可能性)  that polite rejection can lead to a request for further advice. So it is particularly important for English learners to become familiar with this conversational skill.

A. Learn by heart the following expressions for accepting and rejecting advice:

* Accepting Advice

—  That (certainly) sounds like a good idea. Thank you.

— What a good idea! Thank you.

— That (certainly) sounds like good advice. Thank you.

— That’s certainly a possibility. Thanks.

— Right. I’ll do that. Thanks.

— That might work well.

* Rejecting Advice

— I’m not sure I can do that. You see + EXCUSE.

— I’m not sure I’d be able to do that. You see + EXCUSE.

— Isn’t there anything else I can/could do?

— I’m sure that’s excellent advice, only + EXCUSE.

— I’m afraid that’s not really possible.

— I’m afraid that’s out of the question.

● 2. Tell the class about a decision facing you or a planned course of action and ask for advice. When you have heard a piece of advice, either accept it happily or reject it politely with reasonable excuse(s). Try to use the language you have picked up in Ex. 1.

● 3. Before you listen to the upcoming conversation, read the following words and expressions which may be new to you.

A. Listen to the following conversation twice and fill in the blanks with the missing words.

Paul:  Hey, Amy, guess what?

Amy:  Sounds like you’ve got good news!

Paul:  You bet! They called to invite me for an interview at the company tomorrow morning.

Amy:  Oh, yeah? Good for you.

Paul:  Thanks. But what do you suggest I wear to the interview?

Amy:  Good question! You know, we are taught the importance of leaving a good first impression at an interview. And people say “You are what you wear.” So I think that the best thing to do is to look neat and appear decent.

Paul:  Right. I’ll do that. Thanks.

Amy:  Personally, I would advise you to buy yourself a name-brand suit. I’m sure you’ll look smart in that.

Paul:  I’m afraid that’s out of the question. You know, I can’t afford it. That’ll cost me a fortune.

Amy:  I see.

Paul:  Isn’t there anything else I could wear?

Amy:  Well, it might be a good idea to explore the shopping center to see if you can find any good bargains. What’d you say?

Paul:  That certainly sounds like good advice. Thank you.

Amy:  Need company?

Paul:  Why not?

B. Now listen to the above conversation again and answer the following questions.

1. What is Paul so excited about?

He is excited about the interview tomorrow.

2. What does Paul know about the importance of an interview?

He knows the importance of leaving a good first impression at an interview.

3. What does Amy suggest Paul wear?

She suggests that he wear a name-brand suit.

4. Why does Paul reject her advice?

Because it will cost him a fortune.

5. What does Amy advise Paul to do then?

She advises him to explore the shopping center for good bargains.
