Basic Reading Skills

      索引 (index) 不同于目录，它出现在书的最后。它不以内容出现的先后顺序排列，而是按照字母顺序排列。索引有主题索引、人名索引，也有主题和人名在一起的索引。索引告诉我们某一内容、 某一主题、 某一人物等出现在书中的哪一页或哪几页上，我们甚至能在索引中了解到哪几页上讨论某一内容比较详细。如果说目录告诉我们某一章节主要涉及什么内容，那么索引则告诉我们在书的那些地方出现过与某一主题、某一人物等有关的内容。利用索引能帮助我们在最短的时间里找到我们所需要的信息。
