Theme: Function of university in general and function of business school

Objectives: By the end of the unit, students should be able to:

Knowledge:

(1) Language: 

• recite topic related expressions and generally explain their meaning; 

• understand and recognize the text organization and information classification

• use topic related expressions to express opinions;

• write well-organized exemplification essays; 

• use parallel structures in writing;

(2) Culture:

• Know about basic information on the Business School of Harvard University;

• Understand the differences of Chinese teaching method and British teaching method ;

(3) Field Expertise: 

• understand the four major functions of higher education;

Skills:

• read for general ideas, specific information, implied meaning;

• listen for gist and specific information;

• discuss, survey, or present on given topic;

• obtain critical thinking ability, interpersonal communication ability, independent learning ability;

Values: 

• cultivate critical thinking skills and sense of social responsibility

• explore the responsibilities and missions of contemporary youth in the process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation

小组演讲题目（Presentation topic）：

What We Expect to Gain from University Life and What University Life Can Offer to us

我们期待从大学生活中收获什么，大学生活能给予我们什么

（目前大家尚处于大一阶段，对于大学生活到底能给予你们什么还不够清楚，该活动旨在引导同学们通过深度访谈的方式去进行一定的探索和研究，从而引发相应思考）

Please prepare your group presentation based on the following requirements：

结合以下具体任务，小组讨论并做好分工，准备相应演讲内容。需涵盖以下所有内容，但是不限于此：

1.介绍演讲小组内每个成员入学初期待从大学生活中收获什么

 （PPT上要展示相应同学的照片）

2.介绍调研方法：访谈（Interview）

 (1)访谈目的

 (2)访谈对象的选择

 (3)访谈问题的设计

3.介绍和分析受访者给出的答案

4.总结基于以上分析得出的发现(Findings)和受到的启示(Enlightenment)

重要提示：演讲小组至少要深度访谈两个调研对象，以了解访谈对象在大学生活中体会到的“大学生活给予了他/她什么”

(1)两个调研对象中一个须为目前在校的高年级优秀学长或学姐，可以从国内任意高校各学生组织的负责人、省市级优秀大学生等中进行选择；另一个须为小组成员所熟识的曾经有过大学学习生活体验的任意行业或领域的成功或较成功人士。

(2)访谈问题设计要尽可能全面、合理，如可以从专业学习、职业规划与发展、国际视野、个人成长、社会服务等方面入手进行问题设计。

(3)访谈可以在线上或线下进行，至少要保留访谈录音，视频更佳，Presentation中要适当选择并播放访谈录音或视频片段，PPT中要展示访谈对象的照片及基本信息。

(4)按照格式要求制作PPT；

(5)脱稿演讲（可适当看稿或者笔记提示）。 

提示：组内有1人全程读稿，整组演讲得分为0分。

大学是从事教育和研究的机构。但它们存在的主要原因既不在于纯粹向学生传授知识，也不在于为教师提供研究机会。

大学存在的理由在于它通过将年轻一代和老一辈联合起来，以富有想象力的方式学习，从而保持了知识与生活热情之间的联系。大学传授知识，但它是以富有想象力的方式传授。至少，这是它应该为社会履行的功能。在这方面失败的大学没有存在的理由。这种富于想象力的学习所引发的热情氛围，改变了知识。一个事实不再是赤裸裸的事实，它被赋予了各种可能性。它不再是记忆的负担，它能激发能量，犹如能描绘我们梦境的诗人，也像能实现我们意图的建筑师。
