Writing Skill: Writing a Process Paragraph

When you write a process paragraph, you need to write the steps and events in order, using sequence words and phrases to help the reader follow your writing.

These are some of the words and phrases commonly used in a process paragraph:

1.    Words and phrases used at the beginning of a process: firstly (first), to begin with, at first, initially

2.     Words and phrases used at thesecond and the following steps: secondly(second), third, fourth... then, after that

      3.     Words and phrases used to conclude the steps: finally, last but not least, eventually

Other words and phrases for chronological order: while,at the same time, during, when, as soon as, once...

Besides a list of steps, more details are needed toassist readers to understand the steps or events.


Read Para. 2-7 of Passage B in Part IV. The computer scientist, John Searle, explains the limits of AI in a story. How does he explain? What sequence words and phrases does he use?

Suggested answer:

John Searle explains the limits of AI programs in a story called “The Chinese Room”. The  room is used for answering questions written in Chinese. There are five steps to follow. First, one person takes a piece of paper and writes a question in Chinese on it, and then puts the paper through a hole beside the door. Next, the person in the room takes the paper and compares the Chinese characters to ones in books in the room. After that, the person consults a rulebook, which says things like, “When you see x-symbols, reply with y-symbols”. Then, the person follows the instructions and slips the answer back through the hole by the door. Finally, the person outside looks at the person's answer and checks it to make sure it is correct.


Writing Task


You are going to write a paragraph on the following topic: How the spam filters work


Step 1 Brainstorming for ideas

Note two or more ideas and then share them with a partner.


Step 2 Planning

Follow the outline to make notes for your paragraph. Don't write complete sentences.

 

Outline

Topic sentence: One example of artificial intelligence that most people use on adaily basis is a spam filter.

Steps or events:

1. decipher header information in emails

2.  compare the address of the sender to addresses on a list of spam addresses 

3. filter out the mails from spammers


Step3 Use the notes in the outline to write the first draft of your paragraph. Practice the writing skill you have learned above.


Step 4 Now edit your draft, and correct the mistakes.
