Introduction
I. Purposes and goals:
So far, English is the most widely used language in the world. As international communication is increasing, it is more likely for us even in a comparatively remote part of China to use English in our daily life, work and learning. You may need to buy an exellent product from another country and have to read the English instructions; you may travel abroad and speak English to people from different parts of the world; you may read or publish a professional dissertation in a world-class journal;you may also need to talk to your foreign colleagues at work... English has become a necessity for well-educated people in China.
Our students have learned English for about 10 years. I know you are good at answering questions in exams and also you come here after you have passed an important exam. You are now at a new phase of learning English. We have the following purposes and goals for this course:
1. Acquire knowledge about the English language: pronunciation, word formation, semantics, etc.
2. Acquire knowledge about English-speaking countries and their cultures.
3. Improve the five basic skills of listening, reading, writing, speaking, and translating.
4. English communicating ability: understand and express ideas, emotions, opinions in acceptable ways in English. It involves the proper use of language and social skills.
Besides, while learning English with the help from teachers for so long a time, you now as an independent learner should have found the most effective way for yourself to learn English the most efficiently. There is no so-called the best way that caters to everyone. Everyone has his strengthes and weakness. I will try my best to help you to find your way and you need to reflect and experiment.
