A reading skill: scanning

Read about the skills introduced before Text B. Make sure you understand it and know what to do and how to do it. Try to apply it in reading Text B.

Scanning: a skill that can help you quickly gain information from a book, magazine,newspaper etc.without having to read every word. It is very useful for us to complete a task based on what the question required. So, NOT read the text before we begin the exercise.

 Tips:1.Keep in mind all the times what you are searchig for;

    2.Try to guess in what form the information may most likely appear;

   3.Lean to read several lines at a time so that you can scan through the material rapidly and look for                        information more efficiently.


1.      Answerquestions on P111

2.      Fast-reading.Read the text quickly: the first and the last paragraph+the beginning sentenceof each paragraph.

3.      Readthe word list aloud. If you are not sure about your pronunciation, please readafter the tape.

4.      Readthe text twice more and sum up the main idea: what is this article about? Whatdetails do you notice? Try to answer these questions with the book closed.

5. Write down answers toquestions following the text.

6.  Pay attention to thefollowing sentences and try to translate them.

1.).Shemade a gesture to turn on the patrol car’s flashing light, but her partner,David, beat her to it; he too had sensed the danger.

她动手要去打开巡逻车上的警灯,但她的搭档戴维抢先一步,他也觉察到了险情。

2).Let’s pull that car over before someone gets hurt.

我们让那辆车靠边停下,以免有人出事。

3).The rain has swelled the river into a raging monster. It roared well over itsbanks, rushing swiftly with tree limbs caught in the raging current.

大雨使合水猛涨,变成一头凶猛的怪兽。它咆哮着冲上两岸,夹杂着被急流冲下的树枝,汹涌奔腾。

4).Her eyes, betraying her intense fear, were locked on Jonda’s.

她眼中流露出极度的恐惧,直直地盯着穹达的眼睛。

5).But Jonda feels she has much to be grateful for too,because finally, she ishealed and free of the acute nightmares of her past.

但穹达感到她也同样感激。因为她内心的创伤终于愈合了,她终于摆脱了过去的噩梦。
