Text A  Toward A Brighter Future for All

1.  Read through the new words list quickly in 3minutes. Listen to the Tape to correct your pronunciation.Imitating is a good way to improve your spoken English. Try to record your own voice and compare.




2. Close your  books and listen to the speech given by the president of a foreign university. Please retell the part that impressed you the most.


3. Fast-reading: Read the text in 5 minutes and answer. Students hould read the first and last paragraphs and the beginning sentences of the rest paragraphs.

5. Structure Analysis

1.)Text structure :please read and sum up the main idea of each part

Paragraphs(1-3):openning: the president welcomes and congratulates students and illustrates how the past is related to the new phase of life for students.

Paragraphs(4-7):body: the president’s suggestions and guidance

Paragraph8: concluding: students are called upon to cherish the opportunities andremember their responsibilities as citizens of the community, the nation andthe world.

2.) Develop a paragraph: topic sentence+supported details

Topic sentence: at the beginning of a paragraph

                        A statement of the topic or main idea

                         Not too general; not too specific

Details:         more than 2 pieces

                 Organized in a coherent way

Take Paragraph 4 as a model:

 topic: a time unlike any other(very unique/different)

In doing sth, sb. is reminded of sth. 用于表达某事引起的回忆

应用:第一次给这么多人做演讲时,我想起我的英语老师给我的鼓励和建议。

In making my speech in front of a large audience, I’m reminded of the encouragement and advice from my English teacher.

Meaning: When facing the large number of courses that you can take at college, you may not know how to choose.

Nowadays,many young people feel overwhelmed by the fierce competition in the job market.

11.(Para.5) You will not be able to experience them all, but sample them widely!

Meaning: You will not be able to take all the courses, but try as many different courses as possible to see what they are like.

assume: vt. think that sth. is true, although you do not have definite proof 假定;假设;认为

I assume that every college student has access to the Internet.

12.(Para.5) If I could give you only one piece of advice about selecting courses, it would be this: Challenge yourself!

These useful suggestions open the door to better communication with your parents.
