Yale (耶鲁大学) President Peter Salovey's Welcoming Address to New  Students

Standing here today I'm feeling many of the the same ___(1)___ that President Brewster must have felt in 1970. In his speech, he gave voice to a question that was probably on the minds of many, a question I also pose (提问) to you today: "Where then is the purpose, which makes ___(2)___ supportable, when the world is on fire?"

Today, again, it seems like the world is on fire. The United States is in the midst of its greatest ___(3)___ since 9/11. We are fighting a global pandemic (流行病). This summer, we have witnessed (目击，当场看到) terrible wildfires, drought (干旱) and ___(4)___ in many corners of the globe. These are complex challenges that call out for urgent (紧急的) and concerted (同心协力的) action.

Your college years are a time to develop your ___(5)___ and talents, to challenge yourself in ways you did not think possible, to gain knowledge and understanding, and to ___(6)___.
