Topic6  Teaching language skills

Aims of the unit

In this unit, we are going tofocus on the following:

  1. 1)    What does the development of each of the skills involve?

  2. 2)    What are the principles of teaching language skills to children?

  3. 3)    How to use stores with children?

  4. 4)    How to integrate the four skills?

Language skills including listening, speaking, reading andwriting. In primary schools teachers need to realize that learners are at ayoung age and are just beginning to learn English. Developing their interestand love for the language is the first step to help them learn the language. Therefore, the activities for developing language sills should be fun and motivatingand children need to be encouraged to take part in all sort of activities and tasksto experience the skills. Moreover, language skills should not be dealt with separatelyas they are rarely used separately in real life communications. Teachers shouldthink of ways to integrate them in their teaching.

                       6.1 Listen and do

Children listen to different things compared to adults and they also listen for different purposes. In teaching, we need to take these into consideration when designing listening task. In general, children should be trained to understand what they hear andshow it by acting, drawing or providing simple responses.
