Writing (50 min) Writing a conclusion
1) Students review the key points in writing an introduction and a body paragraph of an academic text.
2) Teacher introduces ways to bring a natural close to the topic: referring back, offering predictions, recommendations or ideas for readers to think further about the topic.
3) Students brainstorm signaling words and phrases which are often used when people give a summary, mention the findings of their research and put forward recommendations for further research.
4) Teacher emphasizes that the following things should be avoided in a conclusion:
l repeating the whole thesis statement;
l focusing on any one particular point or example that has been discussed in the body part;
l putting forward new ideas or giving new evidence.
5) Students finish the exercises 1 &2 on P84-85
Assignments:
1. Write a concluding paragraph for an essay entitled “How Can We Improve Our Self-Esteem?” based on the information on P86.
2. Preview unit 4.
