★Maria: a nun and later a governess, a cheerful and passionate girl. She is a postulant at the convent. She loves to sing and dance. She also loves fresh,quiet and beautiful nature very much. She comes to Salzburg (萨尔茨堡) to work for Captain Von Trapp, the former Austrian Empire Navy officer, as his seven children’s new governess. She can understand what the kids do and soon wins the children’s trust by guiding them, caring for them and helping them. Her kindness and love for the children softens the heart of their father and the governess becomes their new mother.
★Captain Von Trapp: a former navy captain whose wife passed away. He is a good-hearted patriot, and his service in Austrian Empire Navy is meritorious. Yet the death of his beloved wife made him disheartened. There is no singing, no laughter in his home, and he doesn’t allow people to break the rules he’s made. He loves his children, but does not know them well. He runs his house as if running one of his ships.
★Captain’s 7 children: Liesl, Fredrick,Louisa,Brigitta,Kurt, Marta,Gretl.They are naturally lively and lovely, and each has his own personality, hobby and ideal. They want to draw their father’s attention to them, trying to make fun of everyone of the governesses that the captain has invited.
★Baroness Elsa Schneider:a baroness who is engaged with Captain. She is a rich widow and Captain Von Trapp's original love interest. The Baroness's intent is to marry the captain.
★Max Detweiler: one of Captain 's friends. He makes the Von Trapp families enter for an Austrian folk festival and helps the family escape from the Nazis after the performance.
★Reverend Mother：Maria 's Mother Superior. She is full of love to the helpless Maria. She thinks Maria does not belong to the convent and arranges Maria to Captain’s home as a governess.
