The film is set in the year 2154, when humans are engaged in mining reserves of a precious mineral called unobtanium on the lush moon Pandora of the Alpha Centauri star system（半人马座阿尔法星）. The colonists' expansion threatens the continued existence of the Na'vi, a race of humanoids indigenous to Pandora, as well as the moon's ecosystem.

Jake Sully is an ex-Marine with paralyzed legs. He doesn't feel anything worth fighting, so he readily accepts the task to be dispatched to Pandora. This planet has “Unobtanium”, a rare superconductor badly needed by human beings to solve the energy crisis.

We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations from Earth are mining “Unobtanium”. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have to set up Avatar Project, in which human “drivers” have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora-Navi.

Reborn in his avatar, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate Navi, who have become a major obstacle in mining “Unobtanium”. A beautiful Navi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, which changes everything. Jake is taken in by Neytiri's clan, and learns to become one of them after experiencing many tests and adventures. As Jake's relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Navi way of living and finally gets accepted by them.

As Jake is dreaming that he can persuade local aboriginal people to migrate to satisfy the earth people who have a brutal greed through peaceful negotiation, the war started. As the earth people believe their high-tech weapons than any negotiations, so the general gives an order that the tanks and the troops attack the soul of Daniel, the trees.

Soon Jake will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle. The battle will decide nothing less than the fate of the planet. At the end of the film, human completely lost, no planes and guns, even the base are lost and expelled from the Pandora. The last remaining Jake who is left for the selection if he will stay with his wife together, gives up human identity to become a true avatar, a pure beauty.
