Chris Gardner is an ordinary salesman rushing about persuading doctors to buy his medical instrument-a kind of scanner. He works hard, but fails to make his family live a better life. His wife, Linda, can not endure the pressure of supporting the whole family and left him, leaving with him their 5-year-old son, Christopher. Chris not only suffers the dead-end down, but also becomes a single father.
He has only 21 dollars and could not pay the rent, so he and his son have to leave the apartment. Chris finally gets the chance to practice at an investment company, however, there is no salary during the internship, and 90 percent of the people won't have ultimate success. But Chris understands it as a big chance, the only way leading to a happy life. No income, nowhere to go, all Chris has is his son's unconditional trust and love.
They are homeless at night, sleep in motels, subway stations, shelters, and so on. They have to live on the dole. He is frustrated with poverty, but with regard to his son's future and his own beliefs, Chris believes that only if he works hard enough, happiness will come tomorrow! God helps those who help themselves. Chris eventually becomes a successful investment professional.
