2. Period Three:

l  Step One: Post-readinginteraction

After the textteaching, the instructor can have the students listen to the recording of thewhole text and see if they have any questions.

This step shalltake not more than 18 minutes.

l  Step Two:Working withwords and phrases

Ask students todo Exercise 4 to build theirword power. While checking the answers, make explanations when necessary. Thisstep shall take 10 minutes.

l StepThree:Discussion

Proceedto Exercises 5 to enhance students’oral English. Divide students into groups of 4 to 6 for the discussion task. Beforedoing this exercise, ask the students to have a look at the words andexpressions listed in mind map. Some of the answers to the questions in thissection are open-ended. After group discussion, ask 3-5 students to reporttheir answers to the whole class.

This step shall take not morethan 15 minutes.

 

3. Period Four:

l  Step One: Practice:listening and translation 

After a briefrevision of the whole text, ask students to do Exercises 6.Do this exercise to improve their listeningskills. Listen to a news item on Christmas gifts. Then answer these questions. Beforeplaying the tape, the instructor can ask the students to have a quick look atthe new words and the questions first. Then the instructor tells the studentsto listen to the news with the questions in mind. After listening, ask thestudents to answer the questions. After checking the answer, show them the tapescriptto further enhance their understanding.

When doing part A of Exercises 7, remind them to pay special attention tothe italicized parts of the sentences. As for part B of Exercises 7, ask them to use the expressions learned inthe text and compare their translation with the reference answers to improvetheir translation skills.

This step shalltake not more than 20 minutes.  

l  Step Two:Practice:writing

When doing part A of Exercises 8, the summary writing may be assigned ashomework after going through the outline quickly in class.

When doing Part B of Exercises 8 it is important for the instructor toexplain the noun clauses in complex sentences. If time permits, ask students tofinish the exercises after explanations, or assign it as homework.

This step shalltake not more than 15 minutes.

l  Step Three:Surfing the Internet

The Internet-basedtask shall be assigned as homework. Yet it is important to go through theinstructions of Exercises 9 and make sure the students know thepurpose of the task: to acquaint the students with table etiquette in different cultures andto make a comparative research on various standards of table manners and get toknow table layout and the names of cutlery and utensils in the western culture.

This step shalltake not more than 5 minutes.

II.Part 2  Language in Use

1. Period Five:

l  Step One: Homeworkcheck

Check thehomework assigned last period. Ask one or two students to read the text summaryand show them the reference answer afterwards. As for the Internet task, haveseveral students to share their report with the rest of the class. And ask the studentsto hand in their homework after class.

This step shalltake not more than 10 minutes.

l  Step Two:Dialogue: orderingfrom the menu

First ask the studentsto go through the new words listed below the dialogue, then listen to therecording and find their orders on the menu. Second, check their answers andplay the tape again to let them repeat after it. Third, have them practice thedialogue in pairs. Fourth, ask a few pairs to act out the dialogue. Finally gothrough the notes to the dialogue highlighting the practical informationrelated to the subject.

    Go through theinstructions quickly and make sure that the students know the topic of thewriting. Then tell them to browse the given outline and useful expressions box whichwill not only help them get a better understanding of the topic but help themwith the writing as well.
