The United States government is based on the principles of federalism and republicanism, in which power is shared between the federal government and state governments. Each of the 50 states has its own government. In some cases, the state governments have the final say. In other cases, the federal government rules.
The federal government is the central and national government of the United States. It is divided into three equal and separate branches and they are checked and balanced by one another.
