Language
As the United States is a multinational country, many languages are used, or historically have been used here. However, the United States has no official language at thefederal level, though English is the national language and is spoken by approximately 80% of the population as the mother tongue. In general, most of the Black people speak English, but the Hispanics speak Spanish. Spanish is the second most common language in the country and is spoken by about 10% of the population. Though efforts have been made by the American Indians to revive(使…复兴) and preserve their own languages, there are not many Indian languages any more.
In the previous chapter about the United Kingdom, we’ve already introduced American English, in contrast with British English. But even in the United States, several different regionalisms(区域性) of English have developed in different regions such as the South, the North and the Midwest. Linguists also recognize Black English as a separate social dialect of English.
