Guy Fawkes Night (Bonfire Night)
It’s a national festival on November 5 to celebrate a famous eventin British history – the gunpowder plot. At the beginning of 17th century, a group of Catholics planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament while the kingwas in there. Before they could achieve this, one of them, Guy Fawkes, was caught in the cellars under Parliament with the gunpowder. He and his fellow conspirators were all brought to trial and then killed. The failure of thegunpowder plot was celebrated as a victory of British Protestantism over rebel Catholicism.
On Guy Fawkes Night, there are bonfire parties throughout the country, at which the “Guy” is burnt.
