Independence Day
Independence Day, also known as 4th of July, is the national day ofthe United States of America. It was on this day in 1776 when the Continental Congress representing the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The document declared that the American colonies no longer belonged to Great Britain. They ere free and independent states. Although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, the Fourth of July has been accepted as the official anniversary of US independence and is celebrated in all states and territories of the US. In 1941, the US congress proclaimed the Fourth of July a national holiday.
This day is the main patriotic holiday of theentire country. Americans celebrate the holiday with parades, sporting events, patriotic speeches, and picnics. Shops display red, white, and blue decorations.Communities light up the night sky with fireworks to honor the nation’s birthday. Some people visit the birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia.
