April Fool’s Day
April Fool’s Day, sometimes called All Fool’s Day, is the first day of April and is a day to play jokes on others. It is a “for-fun-only” observance.Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their spouse out to eat in a fancyrestaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It is simply a fun little holiday.
Unlike most of the other non-foolish holidays, the origin of April Fool’s Day is uncertain, the most possible explanation for the holiday traces back to the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, when New Year's Day was officially moved from March 25 to January 1. People who forgot about the change were mocked by their friends, as they continued to make New Year visits just after the old March date.
In England, people play jokes only in themorning. You are a “noodle”(笨人)if someone fools you. In the US, pranks(恶作剧) are played on just about everybody. The only “rule” is that no one should be harmed. Even some serious TV stations and newspapers have joke features on this day. BBC, for example, once published a short video of “flying” penguins.
