Britain is a well-known welfare state in which everybody should have the means for the minimum necessities of life, no matter whether they are in unemployment, old age, sickness or over-large families. The operation of this state depends on the following strategies: the system of national insurance based on the contributions of the employed to help the unemployed, the National Health Service that provide free or nearly free medical and dental care for everyone, supplementary benefits provided for those with lower income, and services such as compulsory education and family allowances for the benefit of children. The funds and expenditure for all the services depend on the public money contributed by the taxpayers and general taxation of the state.
