The land
Generally speaking, the island of Great Britain can be divided into two major natural regions: the lowland zone in the east and the southeast, and the highland zone in the north and the west.
The highland zone mainly covers Scotland, North England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It consists of four parts. The first part is the Pennines (奔宁山脉),which is also known as the broad central upland; second is the Lake District within the Northern England, which is famous for its lakes and scenic beauty;and the other two parts cover most of Wales and Scotland. High hills and mountains are more often found in these areas, so the highland zone is cooler than the lowland zone, and receives more rainfall and less sunlight. In many places, farming is impossible. Even where it is feasible, the soil is oftenthin and stony, with a hard rock formation below.
The lowland zone is distributed mainly over England, consisting of the Cheshire (柴郡)Plain and the Lancashire(兰开夏郡) Plain, the lowlands of York and the NorthEastern Lowlands. These plains are well-known for the fertile soil for agriculture.
