National Anthem

The National Anthem

The National Anthem is God Save the Queen,which was a patriotic song first publicly performed in London in 1745 and cameto be known as the National Anthem at the beginning of the 19^THcentury. The lyrics and tune are anonymous, and may date back to the 17^thcentury. The words used today are those sung in 1745. At that time, the throne was belonged to King George II, so the song was sung as “God Save the King”. On official occasions, only the first verse is usually sung.
