I am quite often asked: How do you feel about having ALS(肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化)? The answer is, not a lot. I try to lead as normal a life as possible, and not think about my condition, or regret the things it prevents me from doing, which are not that many.

Stephen Hawking - A Legend and True Visionary
Last Update: March 18, 2018

On March 14, 2018, the world lost a true visionary genius.
The Universe Was His Lab

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He was a Theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author Mr. Hawking was also the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, Univesity of Cambridge.
Mr Hawking's tutor said it was only necessary for Stephen to know something could be done and he then would just go ahead and do it, without needing to see how others did it.

Among numerous well known authored books, he and his daughter, Lucy published a children's book called "George's Secret Key to the Universe." This purpose of this book was to explain theoretical physics in an accessible way for everyone. Several sequels follwed in 2008 2009, 2011 and 2014.
The Man, The Genius
Professor Hawking had a rare, slowly progressing and early onset form of Lou Gehrig's disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). After being diagnosed with this motor neuron disease, he went into a depression. It wasn't until his supervisor, Fred Hoyle (noted Astronomer), encouraged him to return to work, and so he did.
Against All Odds

At school, in his earlier years, he was known as "Einstein", although, he was not academically successful at first, his scientific aptitude continued to grow. His father had wanted him to study medicine, but instead Stephen Hawking decided to study physics and chemistry.
A Super Super-Hero
Professor Hawking's disease progressed more slowly than doctors first thought, after having been diagnosed at the age of 21. His classmates at University said he was a bit of an athletic daredevil and really just wanted to be one of the boys. He was a popular young man with an interest in classical music and science fiction.
His disease steadily progressed, to the point he was only able to communicate through a speech-generating device, at first using a hand-held switches. Later, he communicated with this same device but by using a single cheek muscle and through a speech synthesizer.
Mr. Hawking published many popular books delving into the mysteries of the universe. One particular book of great importance is "A Brief History of Time." He believed that the future of the human race, has to be in space.
"It would not be much of a universe, if it wasn't home to the people you love." Stephen Hawking said.

We all have our own stories, our own reasons for being here.

In his own words, Stephen Hawking epitomized his determined nature, despite his illness, by saying, "I have been lucky that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope."

An amazing human being, and as you said, a true hero to many. Anyone that can become a scholar of this natural and offer so much value to the world with their "brain", is incredible in my books. :)
