Step 4. iExplore 2 Less vs. More

基于Pre-class Assignment, 学生选择生活方式,分享个人观点:

What type of lifestyle do you prefer? Financially abundant (material prosperity) or culturally rich (spiritual wealth)? Why?

Step 5. Writing skills

1.   Achieving cohesion with REPETITION

Cohesion is the grammatical and lexical linking within a text or sentence that holds atext together and gives it meaning.

  • How to achieve cohesion in writing?

Cohesionin writing is achieved in many ways. Repetition is one of them which help readers to relate what they have just read with what they are going to read.

The writer could repeat words, phrases, or ideas that appear in a previous sentence or paragraph.

Orthey could avoid dullness with variations of the word (teach, teacher), pronouns (teachers, they), or synonyms (walk, wander).

Millennials, born 1980-2000, are a generation 92 million strong. They (pronoun) stand to inherit large amounts of wealth and will control the spending power in the US for quite some time. This generation (repetition, pronoun) has grown up with immense uncertainty, being witness to the 2008-2009 stock market catastrophe and partners-in-crime that has wrapped students in debt. These (pronoun) have left lasting reminders for millennials that owning things might not be the smartest financial decision. (Para. 3)

  • Read the following paragraphs and identify the repetition, following the examples in the above box. Write the repeated words or information of Column A in the corresponding blanks in Column B.

(1) Millennials grew up with computers and the Internet. (2) This familiarity makes them good at understanding information technology. (3) They tend to adjust readily to new programs, operating systems (OS) and devices and to perform computer-based tasks more quickly than older generations. (4) Although it's been proven that multitasking is not usually an effective way to work, millennials may be theemployees that are most likely to pull it off. (5) Millennials are generally comfortable with the idea of a public Internet life. (6) Privacy, in the millennial eye, ismostly a concern of functional settings limiting who sees their online shares.(7) This comfort with social media means they are good at self-promotion and fostering connections through online media. (8) But this approach often results in an issue when comparing themselves to peers. (9) Millennials are sometimes frustrated by the grass seeming greener on the other side of the fence. (10) That impression may be due to people's image crafting, which emphasizes their good qualities and exciting parts of their lives.
