Step 3. 阅读/写作技巧(15

  • Identify the topic sentence

1Definition

The topic sentence tells readers the main ideaof a paragraph in simple and direct terms. It may include two elements: thetopic, which is the subject of the paragraph, and a perspective on the topic, which is a statement about the topic.

It is usually at the beginning or the end of a paragraph, but its position may vary.

2) Features of topic sentences

A topic sentence must be general instead including details.

A topic sentence must be an opinion.

The topic sentence must include the topic within it.

A topic sentence may end in a plural noun or contain a plural noun that is a general term for the supporting details.

Asentence that is followed by a statement with a contrast term is NOT the topicsentence.

3Drill

Q: Which of the following could be good topicsentences?

A. Twenty-eight students complained that the test was too difficult.

B. You can protect your home from earthquake by taking several precautions.

C. At 12 years old, Steven Spielberg wasalready visiting film shooting at Universal Studios.

D. There are several steps you should takebefore getting your driver's license.

Reference:

A. No. It is a fact with specific number.

B. Yes. The statement indicates that some specific precautions against earthquake be listed and discussed as supporting details. It ends with the plural word “precautions.”

C. No. It is a fact with specific number andname of a place.

D. Yes, this statement mentions “steps” and indicates that the paragraph that includes it will provide specific steps forgetting the driver's license.

4) Skills practice

Read the following paragraphs. Identify and underline the topic sentences.

 Paragraph 1

Initiating conversations with those around you can create some of the most unexpected friendships. The conversation can start in a non-personal way such asd iscussing lectures or reading assignments, and can lead to meeting for coffee outside of the classroom. It is also helpful to get to know your classmates so that you can find a study partner or have someone you can reach out to for information if you have to miss a class. In classes held in large lecture halls, it is helpful to know a few people, so you don't feel lost in the crowd.

 Paragraph 2

Perhaps you wereclass president in high school. Or perhaps you were a member of the honorsociety. You could have graduated in the top five percent of your graduatingclass; perhaps you were even valedictorian (致告别词的毕业生代表). Maybe you were inthe honors program. Actually, it doesn’t really matter what you did in high schoolas you make the transition to college. High school success (or lack of it)doesn’t automatically apply to college.
