If a meeting is going to be productive, all the participants need to be involved. Don’t forget the quiet people, because their ideas are just as valid. Everyone should be encouraged not only to express their own views, but also to listen to other people. So, it’s important that the meeting is conducted in an atmosphere of respect. Opinions should never be allowed to get personal, and people should have space to develop their arguments. The problem for the chairperson is that everybody needs to say what they think, but at the end of the meeting, they need to reach some kind of agreement, so he or she has to be strong as well as diplomatic.

Carmen Garcia One big area where there’s room for improvement seems to be the standard of our rooms. Across the board, customer satisfaction stands at just 80 per cent, withonly 22 per cent of our clients rating 'excellent’ in this category. What's your reaction to this?

FrancoCastilli Well, Carmen, to be honest, I'mquite surprised. The quality of our rooms is something we really pride ourselves on,especially in Italy.

Our three hotels here are new and modern,and, moreover, service and cleanliness are maintained at really high standards. I can't accept that this applies to us.

Sarah Newman Well,I don't know about Italy,but I'd have to agree that the British hotels are looking

a bit shabby.

CG OK, I know that hotels in some countries need modernizing, Sarah, but, aside from that, do you agree with Franco that everything's being done to maintain standards of cleanliness? The evidence seems to be saying that we aren't doing enough, especially in places where the hotels are now quite old and need a lot of work,

Sunita Pirzada Mm, I'd go along with Sarah to a certain extent. I mean, it is true that conditions

do vary from country to country, but, nevertheless, I also think we need to aim for higher standards. What's more, I think we've got to implement a common quality-control code which applies to any Goodrest hotel, in ltaly, the UK, India, the USA, wherever - the same standard everywhere, so that customers always know what they're going to get and can rely on us - even if the hotel's in need of modernizing or whatever the local situation., I don't think that quality control across the group is strict enough.

JeromeJacobson Yes, I agree with Sunita. We need to review our guidelinesand have a commontraining programme for all our staff,everywhere.

SN I'm not so sure about that. I mean, I've got to disagree about having common guidelines. As I said before, standards vary from country to country, according to local conditions. In Britain, for example, it's really difficult to attract good staff with the pay and conditions we're offering.

However, this is the 21st century, and Sunita and Jerome are right--our clients have a right to demand top-class standards in a Goodrest hotel, wherever It is.
