Teaching Goals 

Upon completion of this unit, teachers are expected to have enabled students (Ss) to: 

■  have a thorough understanding of the text contextually and linguistically; 

■   build up an active vocabulary to talk about the pursuit of dreams and know how to use the key words and expressions in context properly; 

■  know what makes successful dream chasers; 

■  talk about their own dream jobs and explain how to make their dreams come true; 

■  write a well-developed paragraph with a clear topic sentence.

Part 1: Opener

Pair work: Look at the two photos below. Then work with your partner and answer the questions that follow. You may want to search online for information by using your cell phone to scan the QR codes (二维码).

1. Can you say a few words about the two people in the pictures?

2. What dream did each of them have and work hard to achieve?

3. What difficulties did they come across when pursuing their dreams?

Read the passage The Chinese Dream Vs. the American Dreamand Work in groups to discuss the following questions.

1. What is the difference between the Chinese Dream and the American dream? 

2. What conclusion can you draw from the responses of the two peoples towards their national dreams?

Watch the microlecture provided here, and share your experience and feelings with your group members.

Talk about the microlecture in groups, and each group should discuss at least two questions in depth.

1. Who impresses you most? Why? 

2. Why do these handicapped people insist on chasing their dreams?

3. What valuable qualities do they possess?

4. As an able-bodied young person, what can you learn from them?
