Cultural Notes

  1. A mayor is the most important official in a town or city. The postition of Mayor of London was instituted in 1189 and the official was given the title Lord Mayor of London. Today London has both a Mayor, elected by Londoners and the Lord Mayor of the City of London Corporation which represents London's financial services industry. 

  2. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though there is a museum which tourists visit as if it were his home. 

    

3. Dick Whittington is a poor orphan who travels to London in hope of finding a better future. His life is harsh and his decides to leave, but as he does so he hears bells ringing and they seem to be telling him to turn back and that one day he will be the Lord Mayor. This gives him hope and he returns, makes his fortune and does indeed become the Lord Mayor. Dick's cat is a great catcher of mice and helps Dick earn money. Eventually, it is sold for a large sum to a king overseas with a serious rodent problem.

4.  Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), was a member of a group of conspirators who planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Their plan failed and he was caught and executed.
