Inside View

Conversation 1

Camden[卡姆登] in North London is a major tourist attraction. A craft market [手工艺品市集 (Camden Lock Market[卡姆登水闸市集) was opened by the canal ( hence "lock") in 1972 and quickly became very popular. Other markets followed : Camden Stables Market[卡姆登马厩市集] (horses used to be kept there for pulling barges along teh canal), which specializes in alternative fashion, Buck street Market, and Inverness Street Market.

Asian visitors are often surpirsed at how early shopping finishes in the UK. 6 pm is the usual closing time for all types of shops. Many are also closed on Sundays.

Conversation 1

Carnival[狂欢节] / Shrove Tuesday[忏悔日] is the last day before Lent[大斋期], a period during which Christians are supposed to give up pleasures and eat very moderately. It is the last chance to go wild before Lent. The actual word means “goodbye meat” in Latin as one is not supposed to eat it during Lent. Lent lasts 40 days, but as the Sundays in Lent are not actually part of Lent, Easter [复活节] is actually the 47th day after Carnival. These customs are particularly important in Catholic countries.

Conversation 2

West Indian [西印度群岛人] : The islands of the West Indies in the Caribbean were largely British colonies and there has been a considerable degree of immigration into the UK from them. London has a large population of people with West Indian descent, and they put great effort into this huge annual street party.
