Inthe field of civil engineering, nearly all projects are built onto, or into,the ground. Whether the project is a structure, a road, a tunnel, or a bridge,the nature of the soil at that location is of great importance to the civilengineer. Geotechnical engineering is the term given to the branch ofengineering which is concerned with aspects pertaining to the ground. Soilmechanicsis the subject within this branch which looks at the behaviors (stress,strain, strength, seepage, stabilityetc.) of soil in civil engineering.
