The Importance of Motivation and Methods in Learning
Learning is an activity whose outcomes can vary greatly among people. Those outstanding learners are often jokingly called as Learning Gods or Goddesses in Chinese schools, as they are particularly gifted or possess some superpowers, because even some classmates seem to work equally hard as them, there is still a huge gap between them. Besides working hard, what other elements also contribute to the differences in outcomes? They are motivation and methods.
Motivation is the drive that keeps a person to carry on especially when the learning is challenging. The stronger the motivation is, the more sustainable the learning activity can go on. Strong motivation is not just a slogan, but always active, meticulous and practical. A person with such strong motivation is usually really interested in things he or she is learning, so he or she have both short-term and long term goals, and to fulfill the goals, they will adjust their motivation practically.
However, it is not enough to have only the motivation, a person needs to carefully plan, observe and adjust his or her learning methods so that they will not waste their efforts and time. Methods are both subjective and objective, as there are some methods which can be useful for most people, but every individual still should find the best combination of methods that works for him or her particularly.
To sum up, if we compare learning as a war, motivation is the strategy in winning this war, while methods are the tactics in fighting every battle. So when we feel frustrated temporarily in the outcomes of our learning, calm down and think what can motivate us better and what methods we need to change or adopt.
